It was 12 o’clock, the only time of day one was permitted to break silence and ask a question during Vipasanna
—
Thought — thought
LOOP LOOP
Thought — thought
LOOP LOOP
—
“Teacher, may I ask you a question?”
Guru Jee nods.
—
I move towards him
Spending a few moments nervously adjusting the pillow below me as he waited for me to begin
—
“I must ask you, why is it that these cravings repeat over and over incessantly? I try to understand why I am attached to these desires, hoping they will disappear with a revelation, but still, they loop”
—
Taking a few minutes to gather his thoughts,
Guru Jee glances above my head
and I listen to the fan rock as it spun above us.
—
The only sound in the room.
—
After a few deep breathes, he looks softly at me and says
—
“You must not worry yourself with ‘why’,
For then you are still playing within the confines of your mind.
—
The mind is the problem, that’s why.”
—
As I begun to gather my belongings and make my way out
Guru Jee looks at me sternly and slowly repeats once more
—
“Do not give your thoughts any importance.
Your mind is the problem,
That’s why”
